Travel: Student Travel Support for the 2026 Annual International Cryptology Conference (Crypto)

Modern cryptography studies secure communication and computation in the presence of potentially adversarial parties. Running annually since 1981, Crypto is the longest running and most prominent academic conference on modern cryptography. Papers that have appeared at Crypto have advanced both the research and the practice of modern cryptography. A large variety of modern digital security technologies -- ranging from end-to-end encryption to chip-based credit cards, from the web certificate infrastructure to secure multiparty computation, from cryptocurrencies to trusted platform modules -- all owe their existence, at least in part, to papers that appeared at Crypto. There is a high demand for specialists in cryptography and computer security in both academia and industry. The costs to attend Crypto, while carefully controlled through use of campus resources in Santa Barbara, are still out of reach of many graduate and undergraduate students. Supporting students to attend crypto will help workforce development in this crucial area of technology. This student travel award will enable students to attend the Crypto 2026 conference by supporting some or all of their registration and travel. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
