Travel: International Congress of Mathematicians 2026: Administration of Travel Grants for Graduate Students and Early Career Mathematicians in Interdisciplinary Fields
National Science FoundationDescription
The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), to be held in Philadelphia, PA, from July 23 to 30, 2026, is the world’s leading gathering of mathematicians and a key venue for establishing collaborations and exploring emerging research directions. Mathematics research is increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, data science, and computational science. Supporting early-career researchers engaged in these areas accelerates their integration into global research networks and helps build the next generation of cross-disciplinary expertise in the United States. The American Mathematical Society will administer a priority-area-focused program to support a targeted cohort of graduate students and early-career mathematicians through competitive travel grants. This program expands access to ICM participation by focusing on applicants who demonstrate strong potential for interdisciplinary research aligned with NSF priorities, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing. By enabling participation at the ICM, this program will help early-career researchers establish connections, gain exposure to emerging fields, and contribute to the development of a robust pipeline of mathematicians working at the interface of mathematics and other disciplines. https://www.icm2026.org This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
