Travel: Expanding Expertise in Subduction Zone Processes

Subduction zones like those in the western United States host many significant geohazards that pose risk to society, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and mass wasting events. This travel award will support 12 early career scientists to attend the Cargese School of Subduction Zone Processes which gathers multi-disciplinary researchers from around the world to present results, discuss, and collaborate on subduction dynamics. This will facilitate international collaboration and foster new research connections. Supporting the participation of U.S-based scientists at this workshop aligns with this strategy and builds the STEM workforce. Cascading interactions among geohazards require collaborative approaches that leverage complementary expertise to advance our understanding of subduction dynamics. Given the scale of subduction zones that stretch over thousands of kilometers, international collaborations enable the comparison of different subduction settings. This effort is designed to train and support students and early career scientists in subduction zone science by: (1) providing an overview of state-of-the-art science; (2) training students in using novel methodologies and approaches; and (3) creating opportunities to start new international scientific collaborations. As a result early career scientists will have multiple means to communicate their work and create meaningful collaborations among the international subduction science community. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
