Description
Space weather, or the variable conditions in near-Earth space environment, can disrupt technologies that people rely on every day, including GPS navigation, satellite communications, power grids, and aviation. The annual Space Weather Workshop is the nation’s leading forum for connecting space weather research with real world applications. It brings together scientists, engineers, students, government agencies, and industry representatives to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and improve our ability to understand and respond to space weather. Federal co-sponsors of the workshop include NOAA, NASA, and NSF. Workshop Participants will discuss recent scientific advances, new monitoring and forecasting tools, and ways to turn research discoveries into practical services that help protect critical infrastructure and public safety. The workshop places emphasis on education and workforce development by supporting student participation and providing opportunities for early career scientists to engage with experts from across the space weather community. Workshop materials and outcomes will be broadly disseminated online, extending benefits to the wider community beyond the workshop participants. By encouraging collaboration across universities, government agencies, and the private sector, the Space Weather Workshop helps strengthen national preparedness for space weather impacts and supports the continued reliability of technologies that underpin modern life. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
