R/V Hugh R. Sharp Oceanographic Instrumentation

U.S. National Science Foundation

Description

This project provides funding to the University of Delaware for acquisition and installation of rugged controller displays and associated cable monitoring system upgrades aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp, a research vessel operating as part of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet. The modernization effort will support accurate real-time monitoring of cable tensions during scientific deployments, helping protect personnel, scientific equipment, and vessel infrastructure while extending the operational life of critical tension members. The upgraded capability will support a broad range of NSF-funded oceanographic research, educational, and workforce development activities conducted aboard the vessel. The project will strengthen shared research infrastructure supporting scientists, students, and technical personnel utilizing the R/V Hugh R. Sharp, while also supporting educational and workforce development activities including STEMSEAS (Science, Technology, Engineering And Math Student Experiences Aboard Ships) training cruises. The upgraded system will replace obsolete and unsupported equipment used to monitor tension members during over-the-side scientific operations. By reducing operational downtime and replacing aging unsupported equipment, the project will help maintain reliable access to scientific operations for federally funded research programs and improve long-term vessel readiness. The upgraded monitoring capability supports safe and efficient scientific operations across the broader oceanographic community and helps maintain the operational and technical capabilities of the Academic Research Fleet. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
