Description
1) New non-Human Primate to study Sexual transmission of HIV $208,809 HIV is a sexually transmitted disease and 15% of the people living with it are unaware of their serological status with 7% of them reported having sexual intercourse without using any prevention strategy for the past 12 months. Semen is the main vector for viral transmission globally and mucosal tissue is the point of entry of the virus. However, little is known regarding the anatomic origin, form of virus and viral dynamics in semen as well as the first events in transmission of infection at the mucosal site. While Non-human Primate (NHP) models have helped to understand HIV infection, we still do not have a model that can truly recapitulate the complexity of mucosal challenge. This program has developed cutting edge tools and developed unique expertise to finally develop an NHP model that recapitulates the complexity of human sexual transmission, including the viral diversity and complex natural composition of body fluid as inoculum as well as the intact complex mucosa site with the aim to improve the relevance of animal models for HIV/AIDS pathogenesis studies and prevention. The overarching goal of this study is to increase the understanding about the source of the virus and how it is transmitted to the recipient to identify new ways to prevent sexual infection.
