Medical Artificial Intelligence Core (MEDAI Core)

National Institute of General Medical Sciences

Description

– A Medical AI core is proposed to capitalize on the unprecedented opportunities presented by recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to accelerate biomedical discoveries. Bringing together computer scientists and biomedical data scientists with broad expertise, the MEDAI Core’s objective will be to increase the effectiveness of biomedical researchers by helping them leverage data-driven AI/ML methods. To achieve this objective, the MEDAI Core has the following specific aims: Aim 1: To curate AI-ready health research datasets that cover the local community. Aim 2: To provide AI/ML expertise to biomedical researchers. Aim 3: To provide educational opportunities for biomedical researchers to learn about advances in AI/ML and how to incorporate them into research. By curating AI-ready datasets encompassing different data modalities (e.g., imaging, electronic health records, multi-omics) and specifically focusing on people in Hawaii, the core will enable the development of AI-powered solutions tailored to the unique needs of our community. Through expert consultations, collaborative projects, and the development of custom algorithms using cutting-edge techniques like deep learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, MEDAI Core will empower biomedical researchers to leverage AI/ML for advancements in diagnostics, disease modeling, and data curation efforts of Aim 1. Finally, the MEDAI Core will ensure researchers at UH are equipped with the necessary skills to effectively integrate AI/ML into their work through a multi-pronged educational approach including hands-on training workshops, integration of AI/ML into graduate curricula, and specialized graduate research opportunities.
