Core support for the atmospheric sciences research board at the National Academies

The Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) strengthens the nation’s capacity to address increasingly complex challenges by advancing convergence research that connects fundamental science to practical applications for society. Communities across the United States are facing escalating risks from natural hazards such as wildfires, floods, tornadoes, drought, and extreme weather events. At the same time, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, data science, and related technologies are transforming how scientific information is generated, analyzed, and applied. Ensuring that these advances are used responsibly and effectively is essential for protecting lives and infrastructure, improving public safety, supporting economic resilience, and informing evidence-based decision-making. BASC has an essential role to play mapping out priorities for future atmospheric science research and identifying needed investments in data, observations, and research infrastructure to support these discoveries and their translation for the benefit of society. Drawing upon the expertise of its volunteer members, BASC engages leading scientists and practitioners from across the nation to identify critical research frontiers and strengthen connections between atmospheric science and societal needs. Members serve pro bono on staggered three-year terms and are evaluated to ensure balance in scientific expertise, sector representation, and professional experience. Board members are selected from academic institutions, industry, national laboratories, and nongovernmental organizations based on their outstanding professional qualifications. This core capacity of the National Academies will ensure that the atmospheric sciences community—and its federal partners—continue to benefit from objective, independent guidance. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
