Core A - Administrative & Outreach

National Cancer Institute

Description

The Administrative and Outreach core (Core A) will provide essential administrative services and support for the UT Southwestern (UTSW) Liver Cancer SPORE. The SPORE MPI, Dr. Singal, is well-suited to provide overall direction, facilitate interactions, provide scientific leadership, and oversee fiscal management of the grant. His scientific background, history of participation in many aspects of clinical and translational science, and administrative roles (including Leader of the UTSW Liver Cancer Program and co-leader of the Population Science and Cancer Control Program of the NCI-designated Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center) make him well-qualified to serve as MPI and Core A Co-Director. He is aided by Core A Co-Director, Dr. Hoshida (SPORE MPI and Director of Translational Research of the Liver Cancer Program), and a first-rate administrative team. An Executive Committee (Project Leaders and Core Directors) provides advice for the planning of SPORE strategic directions, interactions with departments and administration, faculty recruitment, and resource allocation. The Liver Cancer SPORE is well-integrated within the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and benefits from institutional shared resources. Institutional commitment is also illustrated by participation in the Internal Advisory Board of outstanding investigators and institutional leaders and a significant financial commitment, both during SPORE planning as well as moving forward. The SPORE includes a dynamic patient advocacy panel of engaged individuals who will be involved in advocacy and outreach activities, including community engagement and education, raising awareness about liver cancer, and reviewing clinical trials. Our outstanding External Advisory Board includes leaders in their fields with complementary expertise in HCC translational research (Borad, Greten, Bardeesy) and HCC clinical research (Yarchoan and Vogel). Our Internal Advisory Board is comprised of national cancer leaders, including SPORE PIs (Arteaga, Brugarolas, and Minna) and Cancer Center leadership (Arteaga and Minna). The Core A aims should fulfill the objective of organizing a complex network of interactions involving numerous investigators, staff, cores, and advocates: (1) Oversee and direct all scientific and administrative aspects of the SPORE including research/data management, fiscal oversight and adherence, and communication: (a) Oversee and maintain scientific quality and rigor of the SPORE; (b) Record, monitor, and oversee all budgetary items; (c) Monitor and ensure all aspects of SPORE compliance in following NCI regulations and requirements, and communicate with NCI TRP Director (and other staff) to ensure compliance with reporting; (d) Schedule and organize all meetings, including meetings with the advisory boards, and patient advocates. (2) Oversee and coordinate with Development Research Program (DRP) and Career Enhancement Program (CEP) to provide fiscal, organizational, and outreach support. (3) Coordinate and oversee activities of patient advocates. (4) Oversee and facilitate resolution of scientific disputes.
