Description

This award supports a collaborative research workshop on anti-Ramsey theory, to be held at Carnegie Mellon University in August 2026. The workshop brings together up to twenty researchers, including faculty at liberal arts colleges, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, to make focused progress on open problems in anti-Ramsey theory, an active area of combinatorics and graph theory with connections to number theory and algebra. In anti-Ramsey theory, when a system is large enough, no matter how organized it may look, it must have a substructure within the system that is disordered or chaotic. The specific focus of this workshop is the study of rainbow numbers of equations and graphs which has broad applications within discrete mathematics. Participants will work in small research groups, each led by one of the four organizers, on carefully selected open problems that are both mathematically significant and accessible to researchers at various career stages. This workshop advances NSF's mission to promote the progress of science by serving a community of mathematicians for whom a workshop like this and the funding to attend would be especially meaningful: faculty at teaching-intensive institutions with heavy course loads and limited research support, alongside early-career mathematicians at critical points in their careers. Built into the program are professional development sessions on mentoring undergraduate researchers, providing participants the tools to bring active research problems back to their home institutions and engage the next generation of mathematicians. Research outcomes will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and undergraduate research programs at institutions across the country.
