Conference: Convening to Investigate the Impact of AI-Powered Pedagogies in Postsecondary Mathematics Education

U.S. National Science Foundation

Description

This project aims to serve the national interest by providing faculty and researchers in the mathematical sciences with professional development, mentoring, and deeper exposure to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support learning in mathematics and to develop new areas of research in the use of AI tools in undergraduate mathematics education. Specifically, this project will support a convening of educators, researchers, industry experts, and policy leadership to discuss current findings in AI related areas ranging from the implementation of AI support tools in undergraduate mathematics classrooms to the development of current research questions related to different aspects of those tools. This conference seeks to utilize the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) network of educators and researchers to create an opportunity for 25 to 30 practitioners and researchers to convene at MAA headquarters and provide direction for what is currently being done in undergraduate mathematics classrooms, share potential impacts they have informally noted in interactions with students or in early research, and acknowledge the pressing issues from their perspective. These insights will provide a starting point for the interdisciplinary project leadership team to characterize best-practices that can lead to wide-scale adoption of AI-powered mathematics education related activities. The NSF IUSE: EDU Program supports research and development projects to improve the effectiveness of STEM education for all students. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
