Conference: An HBCU Cybersecurity Curriculum Infusion Workshop

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) is committed to enhancing the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to expand participation in the nation's STEM workforce. HBCU-UP works toward this goal by providing awards to develop, implement, and study innovative approaches for making dramatic improvements in the preparation and success of HBCU undergraduate students so that they may participate successfully in graduate programs and/or careers in STEM disciplines. This working Conference: An HBCU Cybersecurity Curriculum Infusion Workshop, from Prairie View A&M University, addresses the growing demand for cybersecurity participation in the workforce by preparing all students for careers in the field. The workshop offers HBCU faculty an opportunity to improve the effectiveness of their curriculum and teach the technical aspects of cybersecurity, discourse about the human elements of cybersecurity for course integration, and develop strategies for collaborating to expand cybersecurity curricula. This conference advances HBCU-UP goals by convening faculty to explore pedagogy and strategies that influence best practices and lessons learned supporting students’ understanding of STEM concepts. The organization and execution of this conference presents an opportunity to strengthen the STEM community by expanding the research capabilities at HBCUs. The conference seeks to convene thought leaders from across 16 HBCUs to discuss STEM interventions in cybersecurity for supporting students through the Knowles Adult Learning Model. In addition to the Knowles Adult Learning Model, the conference integrates a cross-field Collaborative Learning Model to facilitate conversations with faculty to explore findings and generate insights to support effective, impactful academic interventions for undergraduate student success in cybersecurity. The workshop aims to create a new consortium that focuses on faculty interested in expanding awareness and engagement in cybersecurity. It is anticipated that knowledge will be generated on how faculty may accomplish effective science infusion by offering theoretical and practical directions using an instructional cybersecurity template and guide for academic and career development. This conference fosters collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange among HBCUs, ultimately driving progress in the realm of STEM education and research. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
