Description

This project will deploy a mobile weather radar to the Florida Gulf Coast to provide students a hands-on learning experience with advanced observational technology. Students will use the radar to study coastal thunderstorms, which are significant hazards in the region. The University of Oklahoma Rapid-scan X-Band Polarimetric mobile radar (RaXPol) will be deployed in support of a Radar Meteorology course to study mesoscale convective systems and other coastal weather. Students will gain comprehensive experience operating a mobile research radar, designing and executing scanning strategies, collecting and processing rapid-scan polarimetric observations, and conducting case-study analyses using the data. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
