ARDVARC-Advancing Rare Disorders: Vascular mAlformation Research Network with CaNVAS: Career Core
National Heart Lung and Blood InstituteDescription
The Career Enhancement Core (CEC) within the Advancing Rare Disorders-Vascular mAlformation Research Network with CaNVAS (ARDVARC) aims to cultivate the next generation of researchers and clinicians in the field of complex vascular malformations (CVM). CVM, including PI3KCA-related overgrowth spectrum disorders with vascular malformations (PROSvm), complex lymphatic anomalies (CLA), and extracranial arteriovenous malformations (eAVM), are rare and challenging disorders that require specialized knowledge and a multidisciplinary approach. Despite the growing need for expertise, there is a significant gap in formal training programs focused on CVM, leading to a scarcity of qualified professionals in this field. The ARDVARC CEC is designed to address this gap by developing a comprehensive training pathway that integrates clinical and research skills, with a focus on patient-centered, multidisciplinary care. The CEC will leverage the strengths of the existing CaNVAS consortium, which includes 23 academic medical centers with expertise in vascular anomalies, to provide trainees with firsthand experience in both clinical practice and research. Through structured mentorship, educational workshops, and collaborative research opportunities, the CEC will prepare emerging investigators to lead future studies and clinical trials aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of CVMs. By fostering a new generation of experts, the ARDVARC CEC will play a crucial role in advancing the field of vascular anomalies, improving patient outcomes, and contributing to the development of effective therapies. This initiative aligns with the overarching goals of the RDCRN to enhance clinical trial readiness, promote collaboration across disciplines, and support innovative research that addresses the unmet needs of patients with rare diseases. The long-term vision of the CEC is to establish a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals who are equipped to tackle the complex challenges associated with CVMs, ensuring continued progress in this vital area of rare disease research.
