Acquisition of a Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer

Jackson State University (JSU) is a historic black institution of higher learning that is dedicated to advancing STEM education mainly for local students in Mississippi. Aligning with this commitment, the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Atmosphere Science seeks funding to acquire a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. This acquisition aims to enhance the research and educational capacity at JSU and to boost JSU undergraduate and graduate students’ participation in multidisciplinary research. The triple quadrupole mass spectrometer will be used standalone for direct infusion ESI-MS/MS applications and seamlessly integrated with a liquid chromatography system recently acquired in 2023 for UPLC-MS/MS applications as well. This instrument setup will provide the essential UPLC-MS/MS research capability on the JSU campus for the first time. The triple quadrupole UPLC-MS/MS system with six major users will play pivotal roles in multiple research projects encompassing quantitative bioassays, biochar for pollutants’ removal, solar cells, functional nanomaterials for bioimaging, water in dental hard tissues, and breast tumor heterogeneity and metastasis. In addition, the instrumental support extends to educational initiatives, including the teaching of Biochemistry and Instrumental Analysis courses. The proposed instrumentation has robust backing from the institution such as support for infrastructure, supplies, and ongoing maintenance. The acquisition of the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer represents a significant step towards enhancing JSU's research capabilities and fostering a dynamic environment for cutting-edge research and education.
